The founding vision of Dawn Retreat
The Beginning

A Dream Born from the Mist

Dawn Retreat was born from a simple yet profound vision: to create a sanctuary where travelers could experience the raw beauty of Sri Lanka's central highlands without sacrificing comfort or luxury.

Nestled among the emerald hills of Elkaduwe in the Matale District, this country cottage was a home for three generations of a farmer family, before it was renovated to a peaceful retreat.

Years of careful planning and sustainable construction followed, ensuring that every corner harmonizes with the landscape rather than competing with it.

This is a place where you can disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with what truly matters — nature, loved ones, and your inner peace.

We are committed to empowering the local community. Every dish/drink you enjoy at Dawn Retreat has at least one ingredient sourced from small-scale farmers of the village, who share our passion for quality and sustainability.

Every authentic village/trekking/hiking/Laksha experience we offer at Dawn Retreat are connected to at least one family of nearby community, ensuring our inclusive purpose is kept above financial gains.

Sustainability

We strive to operate with a minimal ecological footprint.

  • Structure of the building was carefully planned so that it blends with the nature and not disturb it. Even the soil structure of the land was not disturbed when building and we used manual labor instead of heavy machinery.
  • Our experiences are crafted in such a way that you become a part of the nature and leave no footprint at all.
  • We use solar power to heat the water used in the bathrooms and kitchen.
  • We do not use any artificial flavors/enhancers in our food items so that you get to enjoy truly authentic dishes.

The team at Dawn Retreat

United and harmonized with the passion and a dream to create a place where people come for happiness, the small team of Dawn Retreat represent a powerful story of sharing and caring.

Upon painstakingly completion of building the retreat, the founders were left with two daily paid workers. Their resoluteness to have an uplifted life for their families comprising of 3 kids each, has ignited the determination of the founders to provide continuous employment for these two families and thereby ensure their livelihoods are enhanced and assured. The ladies also joined as housekeepers and assistants to the husbands, and now two families with 3 school going children each are enjoying the sense of assurance and continuity for a better life.
